Meet Alison

For me, art and photography have been my lifelong loves.  It started with pencils and markers at my Grandma's desk,  filling notebook after notebook with drawings.  From there it moved on to watercolor, acrylics and taking every art class my high school counselor would let me.

I got my first camera for Christmas in sixth grade.  I took pictures of mountains on our vacations, flowers, my brother....you name it.  I loved capturing the moments, the colors and the light.

As I got older I would pour over art and photography books.  At first admiring others work and then later studying their techniques so that I could create the visions bursting in my head.

Fast forward to 2005 and starting my own photography business. I am now blessed to be putting my love for art and photography into creating memorable portraits for my clients and their families.  My style is simple, no fuss, no props.  Only great locations and natural light, capturing my subjects in creative, memorable portraits.

I’m still here…

just really busy!  Finishing up the rush of fall pictures and starting in with the holiday season has made my days fly by these past few weeks.  Generally I like to slow things down in December and focus on my family and prepare for the holidays.  That said, blog posts will be sparce over the next few weeks.  You may also notice some changes in the weeks to come both here on the blog and the website.  I will update as I go so you can check them out.  In the meantime here is a preview of some changes you will see…

surprise x 3

I got quite a surprise on Sunday evening as I was doing some work online.  Every now and then I’ll do a google search to make sure my website is getting crawled like it’s supposed to, so I’m doing this and the second line under my website says, “Kodak Picture of the Day, Photographer Alison Bickel”.  WHAT?! So I searched some more and sure enough…last Sunday one of my images was Kodak’s Picture of the Day in New York’s Time Square.  They have a billboard there that features a new photograph each day (as well as posting it on Kodak’s POTD site).  Total surprise. I submitted several pictures about a year ago and they said that they would notify you if any were chosen, but for whatever reason that didn’t happen.  I was a little bummed because I always thought that if I ever had a picture chosen I would go to New York to see it in Times Square.  Oh, well…

So then I had a thought, if I didn’t hear from them on the picture last week what about the others I submitted?  So I started going through past months and sure enough 2 others were chosen.  One in February and the other in March.  Now I know some of you may be thinking at this point that they were stolen and posted since I never got a notification from Kodak(a friend suggested this to me, I didn’t think of it), but I know they are my submissions because of the narratives I included with them.

Pretty cool, even if I wasn’t able to see them as I’d hoped to.  Maybe next time…a girl can dream right?
