Meet Alison

For me, art and photography have been my lifelong loves.  It started with pencils and markers at my Grandma's desk,  filling notebook after notebook with drawings.  From there it moved on to watercolor, acrylics and taking every art class my high school counselor would let me.

I got my first camera for Christmas in sixth grade.  I took pictures of mountains on our vacations, flowers, my brother....you name it.  I loved capturing the moments, the colors and the light.

As I got older I would pour over art and photography books.  At first admiring others work and then later studying their techniques so that I could create the visions bursting in my head.

Fast forward to 2005 and starting my own photography business. I am now blessed to be putting my love for art and photography into creating memorable portraits for my clients and their families.  My style is simple, no fuss, no props.  Only great locations and natural light, capturing my subjects in creative, memorable portraits.

a favorite place

This year I have encouraged my families to choose locations that are meaningful to them for their sessions.  It makes the pictures a little more special and it’s fun for the kids to show me around.

For this family that place is Schram Park.  I had not been there for quite awhile, but upon arrival was reminded of how beautiful it is in the fall.  If you haven’t been there before, definitely check it out.  There are wonderful walking trails, ducks to feed and scenery to enjoy.

This little guy was our fearless leader as we headed out onto the walking trails.

As we reached the bridge and walking path it seemed like a good place to stop for some family shots.

This is one of my favorites from our session…

Of course when you are in a place with this many leaves you have to play in them.

And finally, some pictures of this little one.  There is a lot I could say about her sweet nature, I adored photographing her.

baby girl

I’m going to interrupt my string of family posts to share this little one.  She is the newborn daughter of Alyson Sword, a fellow photographer and friend.  I was honored and excited that she would ask me to photograph her baby girl.

At first baby thought it would be fun to stay awake and be in on the fun…

but she eventually got tired of us and drifted off to a deep sleep.

What a wonderful way to spend the morning…photographing a newborn and hanging out with a photography friend, doesn’t get much better than that!

down on the farm

There is so much to say about the family and location of this session.  I first saw pictures of this farm over the summer and remember thinking it looked like an amazing place to take pictures.  So when we were planning this session and it was mentioned that they were thinking of going to the farm for pictures I knew it would be good.  This farm and the surrounding land have belonged to this family for over 100 years.  There is the main house, wagons, a beautiful red barn, fields of tall grass and a pet cemetery where their beloved pets are buried.  History lives here, you can feel it as soon as you drive up and see it in the faces of the people that love it.  It is where family gathers to spend time together making new memories and reminiscing the old ones.

It was great wandering around with the boys, listening to them talk about some of their favorite things to do when they visit. They showed me the creek, but we’d been warned not to get muddy ;) so we moved on to exploring other areas of the farm.

A little background on this next picture.  This boy loves to read, actually that may be an understatement.  He walks past my house everyday to and from school.  Most days he has his nose buried in a book, reading to himself or to the friend he walks with.  It seemed only fitting that we get a picture of him with a book.

I’ll finish with another family picture. This time including the dog, who followed us around and frequently jumped, in as I was getting ready to shoot. It seemed she just knew exactly where she was supposed to be.
